To foster greater engagement in science learning among deaf and hard of hearing K-12 students and increase the number of deaf people entering science professions, The Learning Center for the Deaf, Boston University, and three national estuarine research reserves in New England collaborated to develop new resources and learning experiences for deaf students and their teachers.

About this resource

As part of this collaboration, the project team worked with Boston University graduate student Carey Ballard to create short career education films based on his interviews of people at various stages of their science careers. He interviewed four people for the series Deaf STEM Journey including Barbara Spiecker, a PhD candidate in Marine Ecology; Dr. Caroline Solomon, the Chair of the Science, Technology, and Mathematics Department at Gallaudet University and a Biological Oceanographer; Alex Balsley, an environmental engineer for the US Coast Guard; and Mauricio Orozco, an undergraduate student at Gallaudet University. These videos support increased deaf participation in science professions by offering young deaf people encouragement and inspiration as they consider potential career paths.
